Copper and Steel Stolen for Scrap Money
Number of thefts of wire, gutters and steel continues to rise in bad economy.
The long-lasting economic recession continues to make metal that can be sold by thieves at scrap prices a popular target.
That was the likely motivation in three recent reported thefts in Lower Macungie Township.
James Arnold McClain reported 20 brown gutters that were 10 feet long each stolen Dec. 26 from in front of his garage at his home in the 7000 block of Creamery Road, police said. An estimated value was not given.
On Jan. 6, $300 in copper was reported stolen from air conditioners at the former Giant store at 6900 Hamilton Blvd. The thief climbed onto the roof between Dec. 22 and Jan. 6, which is when the theft was noticed, according to state police at Fogelsville. The building is owned by Cedar Shopping Centers Inc.
A third incident likely had the same motivation. On Dec. 29, Harry Mathew Langan reported two 12-foot steel trailer ramps were stolen from 6034 Hamilton Blvd., police said. No value was given.
