Macungie Shade Tree Commission to Reconvene

Macungie Council is looking for volunteers who will help select trees for Main Street.

Trees are needed along Macungie's Main Street.

But first, the borough needs people who will volunteer to research which trees would be the best to replace ones that have recently had to be removed.

Council member Chris Becker asked if there could be a portion of the borough's 2013 budget dedicated to purchasing new trees before asking people to step up to volunteer.

But he had already been looking, he said, and he's partial to a maple tree called the "Queen Elizabeth."

The U.S. Forest Service has a list of suggested trees for urban forestry, said Borough Manager Chris Boehm.

Additionally, there is grant money available for replacing a community's shade trees.

Anyone interested in volunteering for Macungie's Shade Tree Commission should contact Borough Hall at 610-966-2503.

Maple trees are the best shade tree, not to big into trees however maples are the best because you do not need a large number of them because they grow large enough and give excellent shade.
