Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

Mary Ann McNabb has Been With LMFD's Women From the Start

She is one of the original founders of the Lower Macungie Fire Department's Women’s Association.

Name:  Mary Ann McNabb

Age:  72

Hometown:  Lower Macungie Township

Family:  Mary Ann and her husband, Allen, have been married for 53 years.  They have a son, Brent, and a daughter, Sharon Doherty. They also have two grandsons and two granddaughters, along with one great-grandson.

Occupation:  Mary Ann currently works part-time in the office of McNabb’s Service and Repairs on Hamilton Boulevard. The station was started by Allen, but is now owned by her son, she said.

Fire Company:  Mary Ann has been a member of the Lower Macungie Fire Department Women’s Association for 15 years, since the organization began.

Describe your job with the ladies auxiliary and how you got involved: “I have been their treasurer since it all began — all 15 years. The money we earn is for the fire team and whatever they need.”

Do you have family members involved with the fire department? “Our entire family has always been involved with the fire department. There are no close relatives not involved with it.”

How do you feel about your loved ones putting their lives in danger?  “It’s a part of our family—a way of life. My father-in-law, William McNabb, was sort of involved with the fire department, even though he was not a member. In the early years of the department, the bell was kept on his porch since he lived next to the fire company. When a call came in, he went out and rang the bell.  That was his job.”

What would you tell people interested in joining the ladies auxiliary?  “Join. We need the help—especially young people.  It’s a great way to help the department and know people in the community.”
