More Ice at Rita's Than We Saw All Winter

They came in droves to the Macungie store for the traditional giveaway to mark the first day of spring.

It comes but once a year.

While this is true of your birthday, Christmas and some other events, it's especially true of the first day of spring -- and not so coincidentally, that day aligns with the March 20 offer for free Italian ice at in Macungie.

The event has become so successful that owner Greg Rhoads this year asked fire police from the Macungie Fire Department to assist in directing traffic. But he did his share: Rhoads could be seen in the parking lot waving on one car, holding up another and just worrying that everyone would come, have a good time and avoid a fender-bender.

And the blueberry-flavored ice was the only thing that turned kids' lips blue. Sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s assured there was nary a chill in sight.

As a result, attendance was particularly good but that only made Rhoads worry more. He just wanted to run a fun and safe event. Despite the worry, the extra measures paid off.

The day included a lot of smiles, laughs and eating styles. Some took heaping spoonfuls, others dipped out tiny bites and some simply drank the last of their cupful to get every drop. Scoop, dip or sip, everyone seemed to enjoy.
