Charlie Dent "Vulnerable" Under New Political Map
Redrawn congressional map changes Charlie Dent's district
Four-term Lehigh Valley Congressman Charlie Dent, a Republican, will see the legislative district he serves change under a new political map - and some say those changes will make him vulnerable to defeat next year.
PoliticsPa ranks Dent fourth in a list of U.S. representatives made vulnerable by redistricting.
Morning Call columnist Bill White says the new gerrymandered congressional district map looks like "somebody holding a crayon had a series of seizures."
For the last 10 years, the 15th district has consisted of all of Northampton County, most of Lehigh County and small parts of Berks and Montgomery Counties.
Under the new map, the district will extend across five counties from Northampton County to Dauphin County.
The district will include all of Lehigh County and the following parts of Northampton County:
- Bethlehem (Northampton County portion) wards 1 through 9 and 15 through 17
- Townships: Allen, Bushkill, East Allen, Hanover, Lehigh, Lower Nazareth, Lower Saucon, Williams; the Belfast, Kesslersville and Plainfield Church districts of Plainfield and the west district of Upper Nazareth
- Boroughs: Bath, Chapman, Hellertown, North Catasauqua, Northampton and Walnutport
The Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley condemned the change as the “disintegration of the Lehigh Valley's political power and cultural, social and economic unity by a state commission with either an errant understanding of theLehighValley, a disregard for the region or some sinister political agenda."
The Reapportionment Commission consists of five representatives: the Pennsylvania House majority caucus, the House minority caucus, the Senate majority caucus and the Senate minority caucus as well as the governor’s office.

Sorry to see that Easton is not longer considered part of the Lehigh Valley politically. Unfortunately Mr. Dent was unwilling or unable to advocate for the Lehigh Valley.

It's questionable whether Charlie actually had any hand in this redistricting..However , it's extremely doubtful that this gerrymandered mess made him vulnerable..The reason the Pennsylvania GOP split the districts, as they have, was to strengthen all of the Pennslyvania toss up Congressional seats for the Republican incumbants..They were , in fact, very frank in saying so..As for my opinion on the process of redistricting you can read my letter to the editor in the express times today, online or in print..The entire process is a sick joke on our Democracy and someone in our legislative delegation needs to introduce legislation to end or clean up the present process...

Jim,
I read your letter to the editor and this posting and I agree with you. I remember speaking with Steve Samuelson about this a while back before the census was taken, and he was trying to get more of a bi-partisan approach to redistricting.

Jim's right. Dent may still be one of the most vulnerable *relative to other Republicans*, but his seat definitely got safer. This didn't more him more vulnerable than he already was. Check out this chart from RealClearPolitics. The Obama vote is 3.5% lower in the new 15th district than in the current one. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2011/12/14/in_pennsylvania_the_gerrymander_of_the_decade_112404.html

Good point, Jon. But what these 'studies' need to start taking into consideration: the level of frustration of the voters. I am a Republican but will not vote for Dent. We need new blood in office. The world is changing and so must our elected officials. So, take one of the 'calculated' votes away from the Republicans. In asking my neighbors...they are saying the same thing; many are Republicans and will vote for someone other then the presently elected official...no matter what party that new person is from. Science is only so accurate. As time moves on and if this economy is still faltering...I believe their 'calculated' win will prove more inaccurate.

It is irresponsible to just vote for someone just because they are "new"! You have to vote for the person who will advance the country in the direction you want it to go in. Whether they are an incumbent or not. I feel the answer to this dilemma is TERM LIMITS FOR CONGRESS!

Rosemary. Every elected official was 'new' at one time. The problems as I see it today...the elected 'industry' as a whole is corrupt. The rules that use to be in place...those in office over the years have found ways around them. There is no checks and balances anymore except to vote out the elected official and vote someone else in. AND...the way the elected officials have 'bent' the run for office rules in their favor...I need 65,000 signatures in order to even run on the ticket...the choices we voters have as a replacement are also corrupt. It is much easier to stay elected than it is to get elected...which is wrong. The entire election 'industry' has been slide over time to favor the incumbent. Do you think this happened by accident?
Given the performance we have seen the past 4+ years by our elected officials...very few are worth a spit. Many....MANY...are just in it for the money. Congressman Charlie Dent has become a 'tool' for the Republican party. Nothing more. And that is what is wrong with America.
And for those that keep voting these people back in...they are also part of the same problem.

Using Obama's vote totals as indicators is not accurate. He's completely lost the Independent voter who was duped into believing him.
That being said, all incumbents are at risk because Washing is as dysfunctional as ever, and that's a tribute to both parties who are equally to blame.

I find it funny how just because people in an area are registered as Republican or Democrat our 'gerrymanders' in office assume and tailor their maps to that is how we will vote. Quite an assumption which those folks in office found out as a wrong assumption when we voted Obama in office. More Republicans voted for Obama that Democrats did! You would think these folks would read between the lines that the electorate was not at all one bit happy...at that time...with the Republicans and we showed it. Bottom line: never assume a thing, gerrymanders. I will vote how I feel like voting. I may be a registered Republican today. Tomorrow I may change my mind. In fact I may speak with every one on my block and change the entire Republican vote to Democrat in a heart beat. We are only allowed one of two choices and currently NEITHER ONE is making a difference or helping the citizens. All that is being done is those in office continue to collect their self-set paychecks, their self-given pensions and health care, and their annual increases. My choice would be to throw the lot of you out of office...set 8 year terms limits...reset the compensation back to how it was written in the Commonwealth Constitution before you all gerrymandered that into full time life sustaining jobs! Yes....many of us are pissed out here! If you have not figured that out by now Mr./Ms. Elected Official...YOU need to be replaced.

Jim...it all looks good on paper. But NO ONE can calculate how the voters will vote. Those that vote straight party...I would rather they stay home. As much as our elected officials are the problem...so are these types of voters. You owe NOTHING to the party that is on your voter registration card....NOTHING. Ask yourselves...what have they done for me? Our elected government has become its own industry. Their cost keeps going up and as evidence today shows...they can't keep jockeying funds to cover their costs. And they return nothing to our GDP. They just borrow more to placate and cover their cost to the people...and we pay for it. How much longer can this go on?
Now....they've run out of money...ran the well dry. The unions the Democrats supported...have just about sucked the middle class dry. The rich people the Republicans sided with...hiding their money or sending it overseas. The middle class...now is the time we need to excersize our rights and vote them OUT. Start over. Impress on the new guys mind: we are watching you.

Actually the best comment is...those in office, especially incumbents, especially those who are think just because they flood their district with their own party members via gerrymandering the district line....be worried.
NO district reconfiguring will protect you. Citizens will vote their opinions and how this economy makes them feel. Being from a party...those days are over. Neither party has impressed me or any other voters. People are tired of the elected 'industry' as a whole. Personally...I feel they are in the business of being 'elected' for themselves. If they were not...then terms for their election and compensation would never have been gerrymandered into a full time job.
Either which way...how a district is aligned or misaligned...does not matter to me. Dent has been in office long enough...and our economy has been messed up long enough via their party posturing and 'lets get Obama out at any cost' attitude. Time for a changing of the guard. Sorry Charlie. You have done a good in the past. And you have a nice smile. But in today's economy...that just is not enough. You ALL forgot why you are there.
Time for a change in district 15. And I am registered as a Republican. To those that moved me into district 15 counting on my Republican vote; sorry, you made a mistake.

Furthermore......representing the people has become secondary to these people in office. Sure they may smile and be helpful on issues. Its all face time. Since they will not 'let us' set term limits for their employment...we have no choice but to use our God given right and throw them out on their ears BASED ON THEIR JOB PERFORMANCE. Not because I may be a Democrat and he is a Republican. And voting them out...no matter how the voting districts are gerrymandered...they can not change.
The public should demand a Commonwealth Constitution change: compensation for any elected official should be based on congressional district school district PSSA scores, the crime rate in the district, level of unemployment for those that live in that congressional district, average age of resident in the district, and a few other non-monetary measuring sticks. This guaranteed income with yearly COLA crap...non-performance based compensation...is garbage.
Voters...ask yourself: which kind of person can do more damage...those that know TOO much about how government works...or those that are beginners?

"Four-term Lehigh Valley Congressman" - Enough said! This guy is a career politician who is more concerned about collecting campaign money and getting reelected than doing whats in the best interest of the citizens he serves. We need term limits for every public office from President (one of the few that has them) to dog catcher. If you can't complete your objectives in two terms it's time to step aside and give someone else a chance to Git'R'Done.

GrowupSaucon. Dent's office has been very helpful for me too when my sick mother had issues with federal offices we just could not get resolved. And for that I am grateful as well. But that does not excuse the poor performance he's shown his constituents over time and his terms. Do you keep a flat tire that got you out of a jam once? No. You replace it when its job is done...just as we need to do with politicians on a regular basis. Our Constitution's design for elected officials was never meant to be a full time job. You get elected, serve your fellow man for a term or two, then you go home and back to your full time job. THAT was the intention of the Constitution. Over time those elected into office thought...hey, this is cool. But...we need to give ourselves raises and car leases and health care and pensions and certain protections that our fellow man does not have like insider trading...all way above our fellow man...and make this a full time job. And here we are today. Over time...maybe another 50 years if this nation makes it that long without a full out revolt that I support...the taxpayers will not be able to afford the salaries, health care, and pensions these elected officials created for themselves. Then what do we do?

Allan is correct. What we, the taxpayers, do see...we do not like. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know when something is wrong. It is the public's job to judge whether our elected officials are doing their job correctly, for the people, or not. And if it is determined they are not doing their job...the people have the right to replace those in office. All we see right now if political posturing on both sides of the aisle. And it has to stop. Will changing elected officials remedy this? Doubtful. But we will send a message that enough is enough. If a few decent elected officials (if there are any) lose their jobs...hey, it happens. Let them start over and run again and have to wade through the nearly impossible rules for getting on the ticket...which they, themselves, created in an effort to stop competition against an incumbent by a new member.

Agreed. 100%. As stated above, it was not the intention of the Constitution to create a lifetime job for an elected official. In order to have term limits...we need to have a Constitutional Convention to change the rules. And in order to have a Constitutional Convention, this needs to be ok'ed by the elected officials. Chances of that happening: near 0. So...here we sit with one tool in our toolbox: vote them out. They created the system slanted to their side. We have one tool to use no matter how 'ugly' it may sound to some voters. Your vote is a very powerful tool...much more so than any elected official can take away. They may make showing ID a requirement. They may change the hours...even the day...of the election. But they can not strip any American of their vote. Given our vote is what we need to use to enforce a lack of term limits....I am all for it.

Good points all and the saddest part of this is that as educated voters you still end up being disenfranchised because of the two party system and the limited options that you're given.
Imagine working very hard at your job everyday and then someone else gets to spend your take-home pay. You'd be mad as a hornet. Well, that's exactly how government operates. It takes your money in the form of taxes paid and does whatever it wants to do with it.
Many elected officials do whatever they have to do to get elected, including spending obscene sums of money given by special interests, then do whatever they want to do while elected, and then turn around and spend large sums of money trying to convince you that you really weren't being screwed, to get re-elected.
Until enough people with integrity gain elected power, nothing or little will ever change and these kinds of debates will continue ad infinitum.

That may be so Dana and you make a very good point. More important to me as an avid political watcher and writer to my elected officials...the voters are beginning to pay more attention to the wrongs that are called out. The next step is to put those new watchers to task and to write to their elected officials and put them on notice. And as we see today with the total grid lock out there...we use our votes to get rid of the dead weight and/or corrupt individuals (if the law does not get them first) and replace them with hopes that we can break that grid lock. This is where we are right now. We have too many politicians in office...we are the most expensive state government of all 50...and our federal government is chocked full of useless overcost departments...just bloated and many of those are 'good ole boy' placements. Time to cull the heard and push for a Constitutional Convention. There are a few elected officials that agree that we need a Convention. Just not enough yet. Sooner or later we will reach the point that we can no longer afford this size of a state and federal govt. But before we do get there...the politicians will rob Peter to pay Paul...in other words, they will cut government employees in an effort to save themselves and the taxpayers will suffer.
