Ron and Donna Gerhart Volunteer Their Time at Macungie Park

The couple answered a plea for help.

Name:  Ron, 64, and Donna Gerhart, 60

Hometown:  Breinigsville

Family:  “We have one daughter, Christine, and one grandson, Landry, 11, who we absolutely adore.  He is so much fun to be with.”

Occupation:  Ron works for the East Penn School District as a custodian and Donna works in the office at Rodale.

Name of organization:  Macungie Memorial Park

Describe what you do.  “We work at the refreshment stand for the past 15 years.  Mostly, we cook and serve the burgers and doggies for all the activities and events at the park.  Over the years, we have met a lot of nice people and often chat while ‘working,' " said Donna.

“We got started volunteering at the park when we saw an article saying that help was greatly needed.  So we called Lynda Ippolito, who was in charge at the time, and she got us started,” said Ron.

Both Ron and Donna agree they have a great time volunteering at the park. They have made many new friends and enjoy talking to the visitors, they said.

How can someone get involved with this group if they want?  “Call the park office and they will get you started.  The help is always needed somewhere.”
