Ron Bechtel Celebrates 50 Years at Das Awkscht Fescht

This year marks his 50th as a Fescht volunteer

Name:  Ronald Bechtel

Age:  60

Hometown:  Macungie

Family:  He has been married for 37 years to his wife, Stephanie.  They have one son, one daughter and one grandchild.

Occupation:  Ronald is retired from Buckeye Pipeline after 35 years.

Name of organization (s):  Das Awkscht Fescht and the Lower Lehigh Lion’s Club.

Describe what you do. “I have volunteered with Das Awkscht Fescht since its beginning—49 years ago.  Next year will be our 50th year. I work at the admission gates at Macungie Park during the car show.

“With the Lion’s Club, I help set up and man their tables at the flea market held at the park every May and October.”

Why have you volunteered?  “I used to come to the park to play as a kid, volunteered to help at the first car show when I was 11 years old.  It was fun and kept me out of trouble for a little while.

“It’s also a way to give back to the community. They provided this beautiful park for us to be in, so we can give some of our time to keep it going. It’s us volunteers that keep this park the way it is.”

How can someone get involved with this group if they want? “All you have to do is call the Macungie Memorial Park office and they will put you where they need the help.  No one is turned away.”

About this column: Every day countless men and women commit their time and risk their lives to serve our Macungie/Lower Macungie/Alburtis community through our local fire departments, ambulance corps and police department and in other ways, too. LowerMacungie Patch will honor these "Heros Next Door" through this ongoing feature. Related Topics: Das Awkscht Fescht, Lion's Club Flea Market, and Ronald Bechtel

Ron is a great Macungie resident. Working w/ Ron & son Scott every year at gate #1 at the Fescht is always a pleasure. His integrity is beyond reproach. Congrats Ron.
