The checkpoint promised by the Pennsylvania State Police to make area highways safer this holiday weekend was held in Lower Macungie Township on July 6 and netted three suspected drunken drivers, police said.

The detail was held at Route 222 at Krocks Road and began at 10:30 p.m., according to state police at Fogelsville. They did not say how long the effort lasted or how many vehicles passed through.

In addition to the three DUI arrests, one person was arrested for drug possession and another for possessing drug paraphernailia, police said. Several traffic citations also were issued, although they did not state the infractions. Many of the citations generally are for equipment failure, such as burned out tail lights.

Police last week said they were teaming with the state Department of Transportation to use a portion of federal funds received to conduct the checkpoint. The initiative was designed to deter drinking and driving or pull those who did so anyway off the road to keep them from hurting others or themselves.
