Lower Macungie Township

Skinheads, Norse Mythology Fuel New Fiction

The new e-Book "There Are Giants in This Valley" is set in and around Lower Macungie Township, home of author Jack Hillman.

Jack Hillman lives with his wife, Bonnie, in a Lower Macungie Township home that looks much like all the others on his block. But inside, Hillman’s extensive collection of novellas and medieval weaponry give hints at more than suburbia. The collections are the wellspring from which his recently released e-Book There Are Giants in This Valley have grown. Published April 13 in conjunction with MUSA Publishing, it is the first in a trilogy that is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year. Hillman’s love of books was born during long hospital stays in the 1950s when, as a child, he battled polio. He has shared and cultivated the love of adventure novels with his family. They love it, too. During his childhood hospital stays he …

Dick Clark Made Dream Come True for My Father

Lehigh Valley man performed song on "American Bandstand" in November 1960.

For most of us, Dick Clark was the man who ushered in a new year. For others, he was the host of numerous game shows. And for the older generations, he was the man who brought music to the mainstream and the masses. For my father, Frank Ciliberti of Forks Township, Dick Clark will always be a special part of his life. It's not every day you can tell people that you're father appeared on "American Bandstand." But that's what my father did long ago before I was born, performing solo on the popular show that Clark made famous first in Philadelphia and later in Los Angeles. My father was one of first in music history to cover "Rock Around the Clock." Now had he been the first to sing that song, like Bill Haley and the Comets, our lives may …

Emmaus High School launched its production of "Guys and Dolls" last night. From the opening strains of the overture through classic favorites that include "I Love You A Bushel and a Peck," "Luck Be A Lady" and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat," the show was a hit. If you don't have tickets, you can still try to get some. Otherwise, take a look at some of the scenes right here on Patch!

'Guys and Dolls' is a Hit!

It was one big hug around the neck.

The splendor of Broadway hit the Emmaus High School stage last night with the opening of "Guys and Dolls." And the production was fabulous. Set in 1950 -- the year it premiered on Broadway -- the upbeat music and dancing was just a pleasure to watch. And the kids had a ball. Any audience can feel tension if there's any on stage, but this show was just fun all around. And the music: Wow! It just doesn't get any more cheery and vivacious than "I Love You A Bushel and a Peck" and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat." Both numbers were well danced, too. The jewel of the show, however, had to be "Luck Be a Lady," with 23 gamblin' dancers perfectly choreographed around Wesly Clerge who played Sky Masterson. Is it possible for one show to have two…

Life in the Slow Lane

Freddy Awards Changed the Arts Landscape

Freddy tradition helped make high school ‘theater geeks’ cool.

Back in the early '90s, my husband and I watched his niece perform in her high school’s endless production of “Li’l Abner.” The 3¾-hour show strained familial bonds to the point where during intermission -- at the 2½-hour mark – Rick told me that he’d give his niece $50 if she promised to never be in another high school musical. Fast forward to 2008, when friends got us tickets to Emmaus High School’s version of “Les Misérables.” The musical was riveting. The production, set, voices, choreography and acting were way beyond what I’d expect from a high school. While credit for the quality of the shows rightly goes to the directors and students, the fact that so many more people look forward to the high school musical season is largely thanks…

I salute the performers, their talent, and their efforts. While the Freddy's have given them some deserved exposure, it has come at a cost. The cost is that they are no longer "student staged" productions, the adults have turned it into an unregulated competition with purchased sets, costumes, etc. in pursuit of the Freddy. Smaller schools like Salisbury have no chance to win. That's why they …   more ›
