Lower Macungie Township Historical Society

Lower Macungie Township Historical Society members bring the past to today's families.

Most people know the Lower Macungie Township Historical Society for two things: the township history book first published in 1976 and reprinted with additions in 1996, and the log house in Wescosville where we hold an open house several times a year.

Did you see us at the Lower Macungie Community Center’s celebration of its 10th anniversary? We were outside, with old agricultural tools on an old wooden farm wagon and a yellow 1950s Jeep that attracted a whole lot of attention from boys ages two through 70. Photos of the seven barns that will be featured during our September 17 barn tour were displayed on the Jeep.

With so many families living in Lower Macungie who have no roots here, we hope to give you opportunities to learn about how the township used to be in its early agricultural and iron-mining days. Did you know that Lockridge Furnace, now in Alburtis, was originally in Lower Macungie Township, and that it was an important manufacturer of pig iron?

If you have a veteran of the Armed Services in your family, you probably know about our “Veterans Recognition Project.” We have been collecting biographical information about men and women who have served the United States in uniform, and placing a single sheet about each in books that anyone may browse at the Lower Macungie Library. We have included veterans going all the way back to the Revolutionary War!

Mark your calendar for our next public meeting featuring a speaker. Doug Peters from Emmaus will be speaking to members of the Lower Macungie and Macungie historical societies about his beautiful new book on trolleys in the Lehigh Valley at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, at the Macungie Institute. The meeting is open to the public, at no charge.

At the Bortz Log House in Wescosville, in the township’s park, we care for the historic 1790s structure and have volunteers who have established and maintain a kitchen garden. Our next event there will be a strawberry festival and spring planting on Saturday, June 4. More on that in a later blog.
