Spring Planting and Tom Sawyer Day at Bortz Log House

Spring planting and Tom Sawyer Day at the Wescosville Log House this Saturday, June 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. The public is invited, no charge.

Something special has been added to the traditional activities at the Wescosville log house for this Saturday's spring planting. We'll have freshly made ice cream with strawberries from Schmidt's Berry Farm, as in the past, and this year we're inviting youngsters to paint some of the pickets on the garden fence. We have bought small paintbrushes for them, and we'll have something to protect their clothes.

Adults have been scraping and painting the log house walls in May, and it's looking very nice -- more importantly, the wooden clapboards are now better protected from the elements than they have been for a couple of years.

If you have not visited the log house in a while, come by this Saturday. It will be open from 2 to 4 p.m. for tours, with open-hearth cooking in the kitchen, planting typical colonial herbs in the kitchen garden, demonstrations of woodworking on antique equipment, strawberries and ice cream, and old-fashioned games.

The log house is in the park next to the Lower Macungie Recreation Center at 5047 Hamilton Boulevard. We hope to see you there!
