And on the Seventh Day They ... Train to Fight Fires

Sunday is no day of rest for Lower Macungie volunteers participating in training to better serve every day.

Members of the Lower Macungie Fire Department gathered March 20 at the Emmaus Emergency Training Center to experience the finer points of their new firetruck, which has been in service since the first of the year.

This particular truck shoots foam, so firefighters led by Chief David Nosal learned the ins and outs of formulating the right mixtures from the men Nosal said literally "wrote the book" on fighting fires with foam: Dominic Coletti Sr. and Dominic Coletti Jr.

The hands-on experience came on the third day of the three-day course as firefighters learned how to mix the proper amounts of foam concentrate, water and air to create the optimal mixture for fighting fires. Foam is used in certain instances to suppress flames.

The group broke into smaller teams and rotated stations that included fighting the fire inside the structure, resting under the care of the Macungie Ambulance Corps and standing at-the-ready to help the firefighters inside in case of an unforeseen occurrence.

The Lower Macungie Fire Department will house its new firetruck and dedicate its Brandywine station 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 14 at the on Sauerkraut Lane.
