Five Family Events for the Weekend
We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children.
Here are a charity volleyball game, a flower show, a craft project, weather lessons and bowling:
FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK
1. Watching students play volleyball against teachers for charity can make you feel good.

Where/When: 6 p.m. March 11 at Lower Macungie Middle School (LMMS), 6299 Lower Macungie Road.
Why Go: The proceeds from the first-ever LMMS students vs. faculty volleyball challenge will benefit the East Penn School District’s Angel Network and the Get in Touch Foundation for teen breast cancer. At the time of this writing, school officials said that there are 25 student teams signed up to compete, making it likely that the volleyball challenge will run a bit longer than its previously publicized 8 p.m. end time.

Pricing: Spectator tickets cost $1 and can be purchased through the school by calling the LMMS main office at 610-395-8593. Tickets will be on sale until the end of the school day on Thursday, March 10. Pizza, soft pretzels and beverages will be on sale during the event.
2. Take some time to smell the roses.
Where/When: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. March 11 and 12 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 13 at the Allentown Fairgrounds, 17th and Chew streets, Allentown.
Why Go: Nearly 50 vendors, plus a bevy of speakers and exhibitors will reassure you that spring really is just around the corner through this year’s “Symphony of Spring” Valley Flower and Garden Show.
Pricing: Adults $6 and children under 12, FREE. A three-day pass can be purchased for $10. Parking is FREE.
3. It’s your chance to celebrate craft month.
Where/When: 10 a.m. to noon March 12 at participating Michaels stores in Whitehall, Quakertown and Easton. Visit the Michael’s Web site to get specific store details.
Why Go: This make-it take-it craft, offered as part of Michaels’ month-long celebration of March as craft month, is a chance for those ages 3 and up to learn to create and decorate a simple yarn doll.
Pricing: FREE. While supplies last.
4. In case the weather outside is frightful.
Where/When: 1:30, 2 and 2:30 p.m. March 12 at the Lehigh Valley Mall, Route 22 and Route 145 N, Whitehall.
Why Go: Part of March is Red Cross Month, this free interactive program by Channel 69 Meteorologist Mark Shanaberger will teach kids how to stay safe in all sorts of bad weather, including floods, lightning and tornadoes. Red Cross Scrubby Bear will be there, too
Pricing: FREE. No registration required.
5. Because some things truly are timeless.
Where/When: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. March 12 at the Emmaus Bowling Center, 4651 Colebrook Ave.
Why Go: This local bowling alley is open all day on Sunday and has wooden ramps and bumpers, making a trip to the lanes a viable family outing for all but the youngest children.
