Today in History: The Christmas Truce of 1914 started shortly after midnight when German troops along the western and eastern fronts in World War I stopped firing their guns and began to sing Christmas carols. At dawn, many German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allies, calling out "Merry Christmas" in their enemies' native languages. At first the French, British and Russian soldiers suspected a trick but, seeing the Germans weren't armed, they shook hands, exchanged little gifts and sang carols and songs together.
