Help Macungie Win $100,000 by Recycling

Recycling each week and recording it with Recyclebank helps the borough win a $100,000 grant.

Have you recycled this week?

If you did, and if you told Recyclebank about it, you are helping the borough of Macungie in its effort to win a grant worth $100,000 from Recyclebank in conjunction with Waste Management and SC Johnson. The money would be earmarked for a project or program that promotes sustainability, the company says.

It's called the Green Choices Recycling Challenge and . Every customer of Waste Management in the borough received a letter from Recyclebank telling about the contest and how to sign up to report individual household recycling habits.

After that, it's easy. You just tell the company each week as you recycle until the contest ends on Dec. 31.

Only one community from each of the 50 states was chosen. Macungie fit the exact demographics the company was looking for, so it became the lucky contestant for all of Pennsylvania.

Recyclebank says that the participating community with the highest percentage of people reporting they recycled at the end of the contest will receive the $100,000 grant.

As of Aug. 8 -- one month into the contest -- Macungie ranks 18 out of 50.

As incentive along the way, Recyclebank rewards participants by giving points that can be saved up and traded for coupons for various products and services.

Visit the borough's website for more information on the program, or call l at 610-966-2503.
