Mack Trucks Earns Higher Profits

Sale of big rigs help Mack Trucks and its Workers

Mack Trucks Inc. has had a picture perfect summer so far.

Earlier this month, a MACK Granite military truck took the lead role as Megatron in the DreamWorks movie, “Tranformers: Dark Side of the Moon.” And on Friday, Mack, a division of the Swedish automaker Volvo AB, announced it had larger than expected profit due to increased demand for heavy trucks in North America.

In May, Mack’s Lower Macungie plant recalled 300 workers in response to the boost in production. And Volvo’s jobs site currently has management positions listed for the Lower Macungie operations as well.

According to Bloomberg, Volvo reported July 22 that the total market for heavy trucks in North America rose 45 percent through June.

The Morning Call reports that Mack delivered 1,801 trucks in June alone, 761 more than a year ago. Mack spokesman John Walsh said the company is profiting from the sale of highway rigs, the trucks that pull trailers used in shipping.
