'Cleaning the Basement' Launched Macungie Business

Electronics recycling business MDE Pickup was born out of the difficulty Founder and CEO Michael Morris had in getting rid of his own electronics equipment.

As a regular Patch feature, we've asked business owners in and around Macungie to tell us about themselves. Today, we're featuring MDE Pickup, LLC.

When did your business get started?
We started this business after a long weekend of cleaning the basement in Sept. 2013. We had a Waste Management Bagster bag to place all of our waste in and we were confident the basement would look better than ever in the end. We had old televisions, computers, monitors, printers, and fax machines filling nearly half the bag. Once the bag was full and we were finished with all the cleaning, we called to have the bag picked up. That's when I heard, "no electronics can be in the bag."

With that new knowledge I headed to Google. A quick search brought up multiple ways on how to remove your electronic waste, but nothing was very clearly stated. The first and clearest answer discovered was a particular dump open only one day a month with very inconvenient hours for a working man with children. It seemed, however, this was one of my only options so I proceeded to look into their pricing and policies. After much searching the website and three phone calls, I had three different price lists, from free to rather expensive and no clearer understanding of the whole e-waste issue.

From here we figured it was not easy for anybody. That is when we made a few phone calls and MDE Pickup was created!

Why did you choose the town you did to open your business?
We chose this area because we are from the area and believe the service was needed here.

What is your business best known for?
MDE Pickup, LLC collects and transports electronic waste for residents. All waste is transported to a local recycling facility where it is properly disposed to keep the waste from reaching the landfills.

What's something interesting about your business your customers might not know?
We also offer to give presentations on the importance of recycling. We are seeking to educate both young children and young adults on the environmental concerns.

Cheaper to break-up and "hide" in your other garbage bags.....LOL. Seen this done a lot. Too easy for most folks to do and sadly reaches the landfill. I think we need to look at WM and their overpriced services. They used to offer this with a scheduled pick-up and now do not. However, prices keep rising.
