These Trees, Shrubs Can Live Near Power Lines, PPL Says

After tall trees are removed from PPL rights of way, property owners can replant from list of 'compatible vegetation.'

PPL Corp. recently met with concerned Lower Mac property owners to explain its new policy and strategy to keep customers' lights on even through the nastiest of storms.

As a result, hundreds of trees on 49 properties throughout the township will be removed beginning within the next few weeks.

The company distributed a list of "compatible vegetation" that can be planted to replace the tress that are being removed from PPL rights of way:

Small Trees

  • Flowering Dogwood
  • Redbud
  • Green Hawthorn
  • Washington Hawthorn
  • American Hornbeam
  • Eastern Red Cedar
  • Winterberry Holly

Large Shrubs

  • Alder
  • Witch-hazel
  • Spicebush
  • Common Chokecherry
  • Elderberry
  • Rhododendron
  • Viburnum
  • Dogwood
  • Sumac Species
  • Chokeberry

Small Shrubs

  • Mountain Laurel
  • American Yew
  • Sweetfern
  • Trumpet Honeysuckle
  • Huckleberries
  • Blueberries
  • Viburnums
  • Meadowsweet (Spirea)
  • Wintergreen
  • Trailing Arbutus
  • Blackberry (Allegheny)
  • Raspberry
  • Hazelnut
  • Scrub Oak

Maybe if we stop overbuilding all over the Valley, PPL won't need so much space!! Others complain about PPL lines. Stop building new homes & businesses, (just lures more people), & work against overpopulation (Population Connection)<<< LOOK at it, and we'll have less need for electric lines. Put your actions where your mouths are !!!!

The Lower Macungie Township Environmental Advisory Council endorses this list of suggested replacement trees and shrubs. That means they are not invasive species and they generally have good value for wildlife.
