Alburtis 100th Birthday: Fireworks, Parade This Weekend

Alburtis is turning 100 and you're invited to a big birthday party this weekend.

Here's the schedule of centennial events for this weekend:

FRIDAY

6:30 p.m.: “100th Birthday” Cake Cutting, featuring Opening Remarks @ Borough Hall (260 Franklin St.) Guests will include U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent, state Sen. Pat Browne, state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, Lehigh County Judge Douglas Reichley, and Lehigh County officials.

7:15 to 9 p.m.: Gallery Opening at Old Vic (in partnership with Folkwerks) – 131 S. Main St. Featuring artistic interpretations of town - past & present

6 to 9 p.m.: Dana Gaynor Blues & Classic Rock at the Fire Company, 328 S. Main St. Food available.

SATURDAY

7:30 to 9:30 a.m.: Pancake & Sausage Breakfast - Lion’s Club at Zion’s Lehigh Church on Spring Creek Road. $5 for all you can eat.

10 a.m.: The Alburtis Centennial Parade, begins at Lockridge Park, featuring the Rajah Shrine Concert Band, The Old Time Plow Boys Clubs, the Allentown Hobo Band, several regional fire companies, and more… including borough representatives, the May Day Queen, local groups, and borough businesses.

ROUTE: Lockridge Park, North on Franklin to Main, to W. 2nd, Left onto Walnut, Left onto School, Right onto Franklin, Return to Lockridge Park

10 a.m. to 6 p.m.:  

  • Scott Stoneback’s 2013 Alburtis Oral History Video Showing at Lockridge Church (407 Franklin St.)
  • Alburtis Lockridge Historical Society Open House
  • Historic Guided Walking Tour, narrated by Kevin Shoemaker – President of the Alburtis Lockridge Historical Society (leaving every hour, 15-20 per group)

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: OPEN HOUSE: ESSA Bank & Trust (11 N. Main St.)

10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: OPEN HOUSE: Zion Lehigh Evangelical Lutheran Church (8269 Spring Creek Road)

10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • OPEN HOUSE: Old Vic Gallery and Frame Shop (131 S. Main St.)
  • OPEN HOUSE: Folkwerks (121 S. Main St.)

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: OPEN HOUSE: Church of the Good Shepherd (135 Quarry Road)

1 p.m.: NEW Alburtis Geo-caching Course with assistance offered by Boy Scout Troop 86. Look for hard copies of the “clue sheet” at the park and bring your GPS!

2 to 5 p.m.: OPEN HOUSE: Campfire Girls (101 Church St.)

2:30 p.m.: Swabia Creek Wooden Frog Float, hosted by the Alburtis Area Community Center. Proceeds to benefit Centennial Event expenses. Two for $5 or $3 each (limited tickets still available). Call 610.704.1200

4 p.m.: Caroline’s Closet “Fashions through the Ages” at the Cast House at Lockridge Park

7 to 9 p.m. The Macungie Band performs at Lockridge Park

SUNDAY

8 a.m.: Church of the Good Shepherd Service at Lockridge Park

10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Historic Guided Walking Tour, narrated by Kevin Shoemaker, president of the Alburtis Lockridge Historical Society (leaving every hour, 15-20 per group) from Lockridge Church

Noon to 1 p.m.: OPEN HOUSE: East Penn Children’s Fitness Academy (45 W. Penn Ave.)

Noon to 5 p.m.: May Day Festival accompanied by crafters and community group food sales. Lehigh Valley Charter School for the Arts will be offering face painting and caricatures by the Boy Scout stand (for a small donation) at Lockridge Park.

2 p.m.: The Lockridge Theatre Group’s May Day Performance featuring  a medieval celebration of Spring amidst the backdrop of the historic Lockridge Furnace ruins.

6 p.m.: Ceremonial Burial of the Time Capsule/Closing Remarks at Borough Hall (260 Franklin St.)

Visit the Alburtis Area Community Center, the Lower Macungie Library, and the 1st UCC to see Alburtis elementary school kids’ 100th Birthday Cards to the borough.
