5. Today in History: On this day in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge opened over the East River, connecting New York City to Brooklyn. Designed by the late John A. Roebling, the Brooklyn Bridge was the largest suspension bridge ever built to that date. It took 14 years and 27 lives in the process.
