This Week at the Library

Jumping back into a full week of storytimes and computer classes at the library.

I hope everyone had a great Valentine’s Day and weekend! To answer the first question that we typically get on an “observation” holiday like this: Yes, we are open today, Monday, Feb. 18. To answer the second question we’ve been getting today, no, we still do not have the 1040 Instruction booklet. We ordered them last summer, but due to the fiscal cliff-related issues going on, they were delayed. Just keep checking on our website or Facebook page to see when they’ve arrived.

We’re coming off of an off-week from storytimes, and I got some planning underway for the summer reading program. That’s a little far off yet to start sharing details, but before we reach the summer, there are a lot of exciting new things that you’ll be seeing at the library in the coming weeks. Microsoft Office 2010 is being put on the public computers. We’ve purchased a new online language-learning system called Mango, which we’ll have an introduction event for in about a month, complete with raffle giveaway.

Now for what’s going on at the library this week…

This week at the library:

Monday: Star Trek: Astronauts; 6:30pm. This is our regular school year program for kids in grades 4-6, happening the second Monday night of every month. This school year, we’re doing a space theme. Advanced registration is required.

Tuesday: 4 year old storytimes, 10:30am and 12:30pm. Advanced registration is required for storytimes, as there’s a limit to how many kids I can fit into the program room, plus advanced registration helps me prepare for the right number of kids… not ending up “short” or wasting craft supplies when people don’t show, and there’s an age cutoff date of 9/12 based on the East Penn School District. Contact us if you’re interested.

Wednesday: 3 year old storytimes, 10:30am and 12:30pm. Again, advanced registration is required for storytimes, for the same reasons as above.

Intro to Microsoft Word, 11am-1pm. Learn the basic skills to understand and use Word, which is the word processing program that makes documents easier to create, share, and read. Advanced registration and a $5 class fee are required.

Thursday: 2 year old storytimes, 10:30am and 12:30pm. Again, advanced registration is required for storytimes.

Ancestry—Library Edition, Part 1 (Formerly the "Genealogy Basics" class); 11am-1pm. Learn genealogy basis while researching your family tree history using these international databases and other online resources. Part 1: Getting Started With Hands-on Training (Part 1 is a prerequisite to take the Part 2 class). Advanced registration and a $5 class fee are required.

AARP Tax-Aide, 1pm-5pm. First-come, first served. Free tax help! For taxpayers with low and moderate-income, with special attention to those age 60 and older.  For more information, call AARP at 1-888-227-7669.

Library Board Meeting; 5pm. The monthly meeting of the Lower Macungie Library Board of Directors is held in the program room, and open to the public.

Saturday: Heritage Quest Workshop; 10am-12pm. This class will explore search techniques to access a unique genealogical database from home computers. It will include Census records, Revolutionary War records, Books and Periodical indexes of Local and Family Histories, post-Civil War African American Family records, and US House and Senate documents. Advanced registration and a $5 class fee are required.

As a regular reminder about TaxAide: we are in no way connected to their scheduling… we simply provide them space to meet. So if you’re calling to schedule an appointment, we won’t be able to help you. You have to come in and schedule with the accountants on Thursdays.

If you have any questions on programs or the library in general, please stop in, call or visit our website!

We’ve removed the ability to reply as we work to make improvements. Learn more here
