This Week at the Library: Be Sensible During Flu Season

Lots of programs this week at the library!

After a few weeks and some time off around the holidays, I’m back to writing the weekly goings-on at the library for the new year. The holidays and time off were great... a bout with mild food poisoning at the end of the weekend/beginning of the week, not so much! But I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season and you’re ready to go for winter! We’re getting back into a program routine here at the library and have some great programming coming up in the new year, including a grant through the National Endowment of the Arts that we’ll be teaming up with ArtsQuest to bring you some great programming.

So what do we have in this full week of programs?

This week at the library:

Monday: Space Trek: Astronauts! 6:30pm. Our space themed school year program with the 2nd-3rd graders, aka the Astronauts. This program happens the second Monday night of every month. Each month, we’ll read some books about that month’s theme, then do an activity or craft. Advanced registration is required.

Tuesday: 4 year old storytimes, 10:30am and 12:30pm. Advanced registration is required for storytimes, as there’s a limit to how many kids I can fit into the program room, plus advanced registration helps me prepare for the right number of kids… not ending up “short” or wasting craft supplies when people don’t show, and there’s an age cutoff date of 9/12 based on the East Penn School District. Thursday: 2 year old storytimes, 10:30am and 12:30pm. Again, advanced registration is required for storytimes.

Friday: ***Regularly scheduled baby and ones storytimes are rescheduled to next Friday, January 25th, same times, for this month onl.***

Saturday: Intro to the Web, 11am-1pm. An introductory course on learning to navigate web pages, basic searches, downloading files, and printing. Advanced registration and a $5 class fee are required.

As you can see above, the regularly scheduled baby programs the 3rd Friday of the month have been rescheduled to the last Friday of the month, for January only. I had an Allentown district libraries meeting pop up for children’s librarians to discuss summer reading (yes, summer reading… already!) We’ll go back to our normal schedule in February.

As a general note, given the wide-spread flu, stomach bugs and colds going around, I thought it was an appropriate time to give our annual request for discernment as far as using the library when sick. If your child is sick and has active symptoms or has in the past 24 hours, and you wouldn't send them to school, we request you hold them back from library, too, as not to spread things to other children in programs. As much as we'd miss them at a program, we'd be much happier knowing they were home resting and getting back to full strength. Also, we know that when you're sick, sometimes you want to use the time to read or watch movies, which is great. But please remember that library materials are shared by a large number of people, so again, be cautious in borrowing when your symptoms are most active.

As always, if you have any questions on programs or the library in general, please stop in, call or visit our website!
