This Week at the Library: Books for Breakfast, Books for Lunch

There's plenty going on for teens and adults, in addition to the normal children's programming, during summer reading! A couple of options are coming up this week!

It’s the start of a new week… hopefully a less hot and humid week, and another one full of summer programming at the library! Before I get into this week, I have to say how much fun it was at the Star Wars Storytime on Saturday morning! We had a great turnout and our little Padawans needed no training in the use of their (pool noodle) light sabers before showing off their epic battle skills! ;) For a little hint at what I’m talking about, check out the video we posted on our Facebook page over the weekend

So amidst all our children’s programming (where we see the most activity in the summer), we have some great things going in our adult and teen areas, as well! Besides the adult summer reading incentive program, this week we’ll have a Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theater performance and book club meeting for the adults. And for the teens and tweens… well, I’m pretty excited for this week! Both age groups have a book discussion: 6-12th graders have the Hunger Games “Books for Lunch” book discussion on Thursday at noon, and 4-6th graders have The Lost Hero “Books for Breakfast” book discussion at 9:30 Saturday morning. Both groups get fed whatever meal they’re attending during, and thanks to the Friends, the first dozen kids signed up for each got a free copy of the book to keep as long as they show up!

In addition to the programs that we expect some great opinions to fly (especially on that Hunger Games one!), we are launching our “Future Me” blog series on our teen blog! We asked students to sign up in the Teen area or comment on the blog with a career field they were interested in pursuing in the future. Then we’d try to interview someone in that field to get some practical (and behind-the-scenes) information on that field. Well, LML tween Nicholas was the first to sign up and put down that he was thinking of becoming a sportscaster. WFMZ sportscaster Jim Vaughn, a library user and storytime dad,  graciously answered some questions for our first post in the series. I’m just finalizing editing the post and it should go up tomorrow, so check out the blog. You can bookmark the homepage or subscribe through email or RSS to make sure you don’t miss any posts. We hope this “Future Me” series is one that becomes a practical tool for our local teens and continues on past the summer’s theme of “Dream Big” about your future. So keep those career field ideas coming! And if you’re the parent of a teen, send them to the blog! Now onto this week’s programs…

So this is what’s up for Week 4 of the Summer Reading Club here at the library! Just as a reminder, you can sign up for any of the 3 Reading Incentive Programs at any time through August 11th, and please, please, please, continue to update your logs! I know the summer gets crazy, but I’d hate for the end of the summer to come and August 11th passes and your child misses out on the prizes or participation certificate they were hoping for. We do pull them and there’s no “going back”, so please keep updating! As you can see by this week’s schedule, there’s something for every age group this summer. If you have any questions on Summer Reading for the kids, please check the Parents tab of the Children’s Homepage or our online program calendar for more information and stay tuned through our Facebook page for up-to-the-moment announcements! We hope to see you in sometime soon at the library!
