Congratulations to "The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore"

A beautiful tribute to the way reading adds color to life, the Oscar nominee for Short Animated Film is right here for you to see!

Editor's Note: Several weeks ago, Erin Stephens, the children's librarian at the Lower Mac Library shared in her blog this Oscar nominee for short animated film. We congratulate everyone involved in creating this work of art, thank Erin Stephens for sharing it with us and invite all of you to spend a very touching 15 minutes watching this now-Oscar winner!

I usually try to refrain from hot-button topic opinions, but before I get into programs this week, I just have to say how personally thankful I am that Tom  Brady lost in Sunday’s Superbowl! I’m sorry to any Patriots fans out there ;) I was cheering for the Giants, which was a tough decision since they knocked out my  wonderful Green Bay Packers (as any regular storytime family knows, Miss Erin is a HUGE Cheesehead. Yes, I own stock.) But it was made easier by the fact that I 1)  am an NFC girl through and through, and 2) think Tom Brady’s overrated :)  Anyway, I hope that anyone watching the game, having a party or in anyway participating in Superbowl festivities had a great time! But on to the programs--  here’s what we have going on this week!

This week at the library:

Monday: Book It Around the World! Gr.K-1; 6:30pm. This is our regular school year program for elementary school age kids in grades K-1st. In our “Around the World” theme, we’ll travel by continent across the globe and his month, we’re in Antarctica! We’ll hear stories about frozen tundra and then do an activity.

Bedtime booktime; ages 2-6; drop by storytime/no signup required. Kids can come in PJs and hear bedtime stories before going home to bed! Usually the first Monday night of the month.

Tuesday: Wildwood-By-the-Sea:  Nostalgia & Recipes Program on Tuesday, February 7th at 6:00 pm.  Local author Anita Hirsch has written a nostalgic cookbook with wonderful photographs from past and present highlighting summers spent in Wildwood, New Jersey.  Come sample a slice of Blueberry Buckle (similar to coffee cake) and a glass of New Year’s Punch (recipes from her book) and hear her stories or share your own stories of the “Jersey Shore.”

Thursday: AARP Tax Aide; 1-5pm. This free service for those 60 and older of low or moderate income level is on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, the library is simply providing the meeting space, so you must come in and sign up for an appointment with the Tax Aide reps in order to meet with them, not the library. (They’re the ones keeping their own appointments, so we don’t even know what they might have available.) If they can’t take you right away, they will schedule a time for you to come in over the next three months of Thursdays that they will be doing this. For more information, call AARP at 1-888-227-7669.

Saturday: Valentine’s Day Drop-by Storytime, 10:30am, all ages. Come in and hear a story about the holiday of love… and then head on back to the craft room and make a few homemade valentines for the ones you love!

Before wrapping up, a HUGE thank you to all who came out for last week’s lecture on 18th Century German architecture in Lehigh County!! We had our largest crowd yet for an adult program.

Our adult services librarian, Denise, is really thinking up great ideas for adult programs, and it’s great to see people finally realizing all the great programs available for ALL ages! Stay tuned for more programs!

On a youth services note, this is an “off-week” from storytimes, so we’ll start up the next cycle next week, but please come in and pick out books… keep the routine going with your children, even though there is no “entertainment” factor of a storytime! I always love seeing familes in off weeks, to show kids there’s more than one reason to come out to the library! Plus, if you come in while I’m available, I’d still love to say hi.

During the off week, I’ll be busy planning ahead… lots to do! I’ll also be working up some extra posts for here on Patch -- one on Your Baby Can Read and another on Boys and Reading. So stay tuned for those sometime in the next week or two!

And finally, I'm ending with a plug for "The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore," which I've linked to here. You'll need 15 minutes to watch it, as a heads up, but it's one of the 5 short animated films up for an Oscar, and it's all about how amazing reading is :)

Hope you have a great week and we hope to see you in the library sometime this week!
