Instilling an Attitude of Service and Compassion

My son is experiencing his first Mission Trip with his youth group and we are all very excited about the entire experience.

This weekend I will be sending off my first born on his first Missions Trip.  I am excited, as is he.  We are especially excited because up until Monday evening, there were no spots left for him to go and he was pretty down about it.

I myself have never been on a youth Mission trip, whether locally or overseas, so I am enjoying all the preperation and excitement just as much as he is.  Our experience in helping those in need has really only been helping the homeless with our church, and we try to do that on a monthly basis.

He will be going with a group called YouthWorks, according to their site this is what they will be doing.

"The charming, small town of Steubenville, Ohio sits on the banks of the Ohio River. Residents take pride in the city’s history, while also enjoying its current slow-paced and friendly atmosphere. But like other small towns, some residents in Steubenville struggle with poverty. You group will share the love of Christ by serving many residents in need in this community—through children’s and elderly ministries and home improvement projects."

I'm excited to hear all about this trip when he returns, to find out just what type of projects they worked on, how the Vacation Bible School went that they participated in and what the nightly activities were like for all involved.

My Son has a heart to serve, to help those around him.  He loves working with younger children in Sunday School and offering assistance to his friends and family.

This is the type of thing that makes a Mom proud, that makes me happy to see that all that my husband and I have done in raising Him to be the type of person that is willing to serve others and focus on the needs of those around him is important to all of us and is also important for us to continue that type of service  through our lifetime.

Do you instill this type of service in your children? Do you try to help them figure out how they can help others?  I feel it's very important to teach them that there is so much more to life than the little neighborhood we live in....reach out.....get involved.....experience the joy that comes from helping others.
