90-Year-Old Driver Injured in Krocks Road Crash

State police say driver was trying to go around a van in a work zone.

A 90-year-old Wescosville woman was hurt and later cited with a traffic violation Monday after her car struck a full-size van in a work zone on S. Krocks Road in Lower Macungie while trying to go around it, police said.

Helen D. Buck was taken by Macungie EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest with apparent rib injuries of unknown severity following the 3:44 p.m. crash, state police at Fogelsville said.

Her 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7 struck a 2000 Ford E-350 that was in a work zone and partially set off by two orange traffic cones at 1475 S. Krocks, which is north of Lower Macungie Road, a state police fax said.

Police also said:

The van, driven by Robert C. Beck, 33, of Allentown, was parked on the right shoulder facing west. Buck's Cougar was west on S. Krocks in the right lane as it approached the first cone. Both cones were placed behind the van.

The Cougar merged into the left oncoming lane in an attempt to go around the van. But when traffic began coming toward the Cougar, it moved slightly to the right—ending up in the middle of the left and right lanes.

The Cougar then hit the van on its left rear bumper and rear driver's side door.

Buck complained of injuries to her right rib cage. Beck was not hurt. The Cougar was towed by Mechanics Plus Towing and the van was towed by A1 Towing.

Buck will be cited for allegedly violating the traffic law for "duty of driver in construction and maintenance areas or on highway safety corridors," police said.
