Alburtis Man Killed in Route 22 Crash

The driver was thrown from his vehicle in the early Sunday morning crash on Route 22 in South Whitehall.

An Alburtis man was thrown from his vehicle in an early morning crash Sunday on Route 22 in South Whitehall died from his injuries, state police at Bethlehem said.

The accident occurred at 3:20 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Route 22, between 15th Street and Cedar Crest Boulevard.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim identified the driver as David A. Coffey, 36, of 469 Laurel Drive, according to a report in The Morning Call. Coffey was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:30 a.m.

State police said the driver in the fatal crash was traveling in the right lane at a high rate of speed when it hit a guardrail, then traveled across both lanes, hitting the center median. The vehicle rolled several times and the driver was ejected.

The westbound road was closed until 6 a.m.
