Car Hits Tree on Snow-Covered Lower Mac Road

Berks County woman taken to hospital following Saturday afternoon crash on Longswamp Road near Alburtis.

An SUV with its cruise control set at 30 mph left a snow-covered Lower Macungie road Saturday afternoon and hit a tree, state police say.

The driver, Virginia M. Hetrick, 56, of the Berks County community of Laureldale, suffered moderate injuries and was taken by Macungie Ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest following the 3pm crash, a state police fax says.

The fax says Hetrick had set her 2005 Mercury Mariner's cruise control at 30 mph before the crash off Longswamp Road about 400 feet west of Smith Lane. Hetrick was eastbound on Longswamp Road and trying to handle a left curve when the crash occurred, the fax says.

The crash site is west of Alburtis.

Hetrick, who was wearing a seat belt, was cited for violating the traffic law "driving vehicle at safe speeds."
