Erratic Behavior at First Niagara Bank Prompts Alarm

Man's tirade prompts employee to push hold-up alarm button, police say.

The actions weren't quite the same as yelling "bomb" on an airplane or "fire" in a crowded theater, but a Macungie man's recent angry behavior brought him some unwanted attention inside a borough bank nonetheless.

Rocco Giannetta became irate over a bank policy on check cashing, according to .

The commotion at 12:48 p.m. May 11 prompted a employee to activate a hold-up alarm. Police thought they were responding to a bank robbery.

Once inside the 201 W. Main St. bank, police sorted out the events. It seemed that Giannetta, 59, became furious when he was told that it would take several days for a check he was depositing to clear before he would have use of the money, police said.

Giannetta, of 505 Brookfield Circle, was cited for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, police said.

The above arrest information was supplied by Macungie Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

I banked there for 20 years. First it was East Penn Bank (a friendly local bank that valued its customers), then Harleysville Bank (a friendly local bank that valued its customers), and now First Niagara (no comment).

Here's the policy of the credit union where I bank now (verbatim): "General Policy. Our general policy is to make funds from Your deposits available to You on the same business day that We receive Your deposit."

It's fortunate that Macungie still has an officer on duty that can respond. If the mayor and certain council members have their way, that won't be the case for long. Fellow residents better attend the next meeting and make your opinion heard. I understand 24/7 coverage will be discussed at the meeting.

Ha, agreed Ted. I also started a bank account with "East Penn Bank" and I really was happy with them. Now, I go there as little as possible, often thought about switching but it is such a process..... you gotta sign your soul to the devil just to close your account!!!!!
