Five Life-Saving Facts About the Macungie Ambulance Corps

Only 1 percent of costs are directly covered by community tax dollars.

Chris Greb, operations manager of the , recently addressed Macungie Council with his biannual report on the first responders' helpful statistics.

1. Macungie Ambulance answered 3,103 emergency calls in 2011:

  • 2,118 or 68 percent, in Lower Macungie Township
  • 364 or 12 percent, came from outside the coverage area
  • 258 or 8 percent, in Macungie
  • 201 or 7 percent, in Upper Milford Township
  • 102 or 3 percent, in Alburtis
  • 62 or 2 percent in Lower Milford Township

2. Money comes from several sources:

  • Invoices and fees for service, 80 percent
  • Annual subscription program, 14 percent
  • Miscellaneous, 3 percent
  • Grants, 1 percent
  • Municipal support, 1 percent
  • Donations, 1 percent

3. The Corps' Special Operations Team provided assistance throughout Lehigh County in 2011 at the Allentown gas explosion, the October snow storm and at the fire at the St. Lukes Hospital Anderson Campus. Other Special Operations Incidents included:

  • 1 Multiple structure explosion and fire
  • 12 Dwelling Fires
  • 4 Structure Fires
  • 3 Search or Terrain Rescues
  • 1 Truck Fire
  • 1 Emergency Shelter Operation

4. Macungie Ambulance took delivery of two new vehicles in 2011:

  • A 2010 Ford/Braun Ambulance that replaced a smaller, heavily used 2005 model.
  • A 2010 Ford F-250 pick-up truck with emergency equipment installed by Kovatch Mobile Equipment which is used for community outreach and education, special operations and advanced life support capabilities.

5. Macungie Ambulance operates four ambulances and several support units. In 2011, these units logged:

  • 54,000 miles
  • 4,500 hours
  • Vehicle operations cost: $55,000
