Icy Conditions Cause Crashes in Lower Mac, Vera Cruz, Police Say

Wednesday morning crashes were on Mountain Road south of Alburtis and Vera Cruz Road North, state police say.

State police dealt with two crashes early Wednesday -- one south of Alburtis and one in Vera Cruz -- caused by icy roads and resulting in apparent minor injuries to drivers of SUVs.

The first one was at 5:56am on Mountain Road, 115 feet south of Barbara Drive in Lower Macungie. The crash site is south of Alburtis and not far from the Berks Coounty line.

A state police fax said Jesse F. Comfort, 32, of Boyertown was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer south on Mountain Road when he lost control on a icy left curve. The Trailblazer hit a utility pole on the east side of the road, causing disabling front-end damage. The SUV had to be towed.

Comfort sustained a minor injury above his left eye but refused EMS treatment, the fax said. Police cited him for driving too fast for conditions. Comfort was wearing a seat belt, the fax said.

Police were assisted by workers from the state Department of Transportation.

The second crash occurred at 7:19am at 4876 Vera Cruz Road North, about 82 feet west of Quarry Drive in the Upper Milford village.

Sonia V. Frias, 40, of Emmaus was driving a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo south on Vera Cruz Road North when she lost control -- like in the other crash, on an icy left curve, the fax said. The SUV hit a berm on the west side of the road that caused it to roll over.

The Rodeo came to rest on its roof and was blocking the southbound lane. Frias was wearing a seat belt, the fax said.

Frias was taken by Emmaus EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment of minor injuries, the fax said. She too was cited for driving too fast for conditions. The SUV had to be towed.

State police were assisted by members of the Vera Cruz Fire Dept.
