Identity Thieves Remain Active, Police Say

Recent Lower Macungie reported crimes include thieves opening credit cards to make fraudulent purchases and another filing a phony tax return.

Access device fraud. Identity theft. Fraud.

Call it what you will.

Unfortunately, the illegal practice is alive and well, as evidenced by several recent incidents in Lower Macungie Township alone, according to state police at Fogelsville.

- Kristopher Michael Azzaro of the 8000 block of Mountain Road reported that several purchases were made March 4 and 5 using his credit card, police said. The thief also used Azzaro's personal information to open a line of credit through PayPal, making several additional fraudulent purchases. No value was given for the purchases.

- Brian King of the 7000 block of Lincoln Drive told police that someone opened two credit card accounts in his name. That thief made several purchases with those cards for a total of several thousand dollars, police said.

- An unnamed 24-year-old man living in the 7000 block of Buttercup Road was victimized when someone made several online purchases March 16 and 17 using his debit card information, police said. No value was provided for the purchases.

- In a slight twist, another thief used the Social Security Number of an unnamed female living in the 1500 block of Kaitlyn Road to file a fraudulent tax return on March 25, police said.
