Jostled Java Causes Lower Mac Crash, Police Say

Spilled coffee diverts attention of Jim Thorpe man, causing him to rear-end Alburtis motorist and sending her to a hospital, troopers report.

Many of us like the boost of caffeine that a cup of coffee gives us in the morning, but two motorists in Lower Macungie recently could have done without a resulting jolt.

Justin V. Yaich, 32, of Jim Thorpe was sipping his coffee as he drove north on Route 100 in the township at 6:53 a.m. Dec. 13, according to state police at Fogelsville. The coffee spilled in his lap, causing him to look down.

As he did, police said, he did not see the car driven by an Alburtis woman stopped in front of him and waiting to turn onto Creamery Road. Yaich's pickup truck struck the rear end of a Mercury Sable driven by Conchita C. Featherston.

Yaich was uninjured, according to police, but Featherston was taken to an area hospital by Macungie Ambulance Corps with unknown severity of injuries.

Yaich was charged with careless driving, police said.
