Fire Company:  Lower Macungie Fire Department

Training:  “Training is constant. It never stops. When I joined 25 years ago, they didn’t require training. You were just handed a coat, hat and boots and waited for calls.”

Describe your job with the fire company.  “I am a firefighter and the engineer of the aerial truck. It takes a lot of time to learn to drive such a long truck.”

Why did you choose to become a firefighter?  “My dad, Larry, is also a firefighter here. My brother was a firefighter, too, before he moved.  It’s just what you do in a community.”

How do your loved ones feel about you putting your life in danger?  “They are pretty much used to it and accept it.  They don’t always like when we get called out during family times, but they know we have to respond.”

What would you tell people interested in joining your fire company?  “I would tell them to be prepared to put in a lot of time for training and getting certified.”
