Lower Macungie Husband Charged in Attempted 'Mercy Killing'

He struck his wife Thursday in the back of the head with a bat, police say.

A 66-year-old Lower Macungie Township man was being held Thursday night in Lehigh County Prison under $1 million bail on charges of attempted criminal homicide, according to police.

John Geisinger hit his wife, Louella, in the back of the head with a baseball bat four or five times, according to . Police gave few details but said the 64-year-old woman was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital and treated for her injuries.  Police did not state the severity of the injuries.

But he did not stop there, according to a Morning Call report.

He also tried to drown her in a bathtub, it said.

Police also did not detail the circumstances of what led up to the alleged attack, which they estimated occurred between 10 and 11:54 a.m. Thursday. However, they said they responded to the home about 12:50 p.m. and eventually arrested John Geisinger at his place of employment.
