Macungie Teen Badly Hurt in Head-On Crash

State police say teen went into opposite lane and collided with oncoming vehicle on Kernsville Road in Lowhill Township.

An 18-year-old Macungie man suffered a "major injury" Monday afternoon in a head-on crash involving two SUVs on Kernsville Road east of the Leather Corner Post Hotel in Lowhill Township, police said.

A 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Tyler Silverstein went into the opposite lane "for unknown reasons" and collided with a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox, state police at Fogelsville said. The time of the crash was 3:40 p.m.

Silverstein was taken by Northern Valley EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. Also taken by Northern Valley to the same hospital was the Equinox driver, Cheryl A. Durich, 45, of Walnutport, who suffered a "moderate injury," state police said.

The crash occurred at 6607 Kernsville Road, which is in Lowhill and has an Orefield mailing address. Silverstein's Jeep was southbound and Durich's Equinox was northbound.

Silverstein will be cited for careless driving, police said.
