Macungie Woman Stole Cop Cars, Led Authorities on Chase Through Philly, Police Say

A Macungie woman stole Camden and Philadelphia police cars then led officers on chases through both cities Tuesday morning, police say.

Shayna Sykes, 23, of 326 Oxford Place, was identified after the mother of Shayna's boyfriend, 23, also of the Oxford Place address, watched the chase on television and recognized her. Bills's mother then contacted Sykes' grandmother, Sharon Sykes, who shares her Macungie home with Shayna and Bills, police say.

Sharon Sykes, in turn, contacted Macungie Police Chief Edward Harry Jr., with whom she had filed a missing persons and stolen vehicle report on Monday. Sharon Sykes had reported that Shayna and Bills had "borrowed her car Friday and she hadn't seen them since," Harry said.

Shortly after hearing from the grandmother Tuesday about the chase, Harry said, he was contacted by Philadelphia police, who confirmed Shayna Sykes' identity.

Philadelphia Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross told Fox News that "very preliminary information" indicates that Shayna Sykes and Bills were apprehended in Camden Tuesday morning, possibly for a traffic violation, and made off with a Camden police car and injuring a Camden police officer in the process. Sykes allegedly was driving and Bills was in the back seat, he said.

After crossing the Ben Franklin Bridge into Philadelphia, Ross said, the two were stopped by Philadelphia police and Sykes again allegedly broke away and absconded this time with a Philadelphia police car.

Along the way, as the video shows, the car allegedly driven by Sykes hits a pedestrian, several parked cars and sideswipes a truck. At one point, flames shoot from the rear of the car.

Ross said the apprehended woman will face "a litany of charges" in Philadelphia alone. He did not feel comfortable speculating about the consequences she will face in Camden.

Macungie Chief Harry said the woman will have so many other charges filed against her that there may be none filed in the borough.

"We'll see what she's being charged with and see what the [Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin] wants to do," Harry said.
