Macungie residents can now receive alerts from the Macungie Police Department free-of-charge via text/SMS, email and web posts.

The Macungie Police Department recently subscribed to a service known as Nixle that will enable residents of Macungie and the surrounding area to get alerts and general information from the police department via text/SMS, e-mail, and Internet posts at no cost.

The type of information that may be sent out through Nixie could be traffic alerts, safety tips and local crime information, as well as other topics that are thought to be important to local residents, according to a press release from Macungie PD.

Residents can subscribe to Nixle by sending a text message with their zip code to 888777, the release says. They will be instantly registered to receive text messages from the Macungie Police Department or other police agencies in this area.

Or residents can create an account at www.nixle.com and select the information they would like to receive and how they would like to receive it -- choosing among text message, email, mobile application or web browser, the release explains.
