Skateboarder Struck, Charged in Lower Mac Accident, Police Say

He failed to yield to motor vehicles when he drove in front of them in the intersection and was struck by a Jeep Cherokee, troopers report.

A 19-year-old "driver" received an ambulance ride and a "calling card" to remember his skateboard ride by late last month in Lower Macungie Township, according to police.

Devon P. Jacobus of Macungie was moderately injured Nov. 28 when he was struck on his skateboard by a vehicle. Despite being the one who was struck and injured, Jacobus was charged as a pedestrian for improperly crossing an intersection and failing to yield the right-of-way to a motor vehicle, according to a report released Dec. 23 by state police at Fogelsville.

According to police, Jacobus was traveling west on Buckeye Road at 9:12 p.m. -- after dark -- in the right travel lane on his skateboard. Jacobus traveled through the intersection with Macungie and Brookside roads and was struck by a Jeep Cherokee driven by Stephen G. Bentz, 20, of Macungie.

Jacobus' unspecified "belongings" struck the vehicle driven by Lois A. Landis, 64, of Walnutport, police said. Landis was driving south on Brookside Road and was waiting in the intersection to turn left onto Buckeye Road.

Jacobus landed in the roadway, police said. He was transported to an area hospital by Macungie Ambulance Corps.
