Two Hurt in 5-Vehicle Crash

Van slams into line of traffic near Wescosville, disabling three cars, police say.

For a short time, it was as if that Mayhem character in the Allstate auto insurance commercials came to Lower Macungie on March 28.

Five vehicles passed near at 4450 Hamilton Blvd. about 2:50 p.m., but only two left under their own power following a five-vehicle chain-reaction crash. Fortunately, only two drivers were injured -- and any injuries likely were minor, since said the operators were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for evaluation.

According to police, here's what happened: Douglas Paul Snoddy, 55, of Macungie was driving a van north near the car dealership when he came upon a line of vehicles stopped at a traffic light. Snoddy could not stop the van in time and struck the rear of a car driven by Elizabeth C. Clyde, 53, of Walnutport.

Her car was pushed into a vehicle driven by John G. Kacmarcik, 54, no address given. Kacmarcik's car then hit one of Violet M. Wisneski, 68, of Allentown, and that vehicle hit one driven by F.E. Bartholomew, 71, of Allentown before all damage was done.

Police reported minor damage to the vehicles of Snoddy and Bartholomew. However, they said those driven by Clyde, Kacmarcik and Wisneski had disabling damage, requiring towing.

Clyde and Kacmarcik were the drivers requiring hospital evaluation, police said.

Police also said that Snoddy will be cited for an unspecified Motor Vehicle Code violation.
