5 'Fun' Questions for Commissioner Ron Beitler

Newly sworn-in Lower Macungie Township Commissioner Ron Beitler takes Patch's questions as he begins his first term on the board.

The start of the new year officially brings Lower Macungie Township two new members of the board of commissioners—Ronald Beitler and Brian Higgins.

Beitler and Higgins were sworn in at a special Monday night meeting of the board, along with incumbent Ryan Conrad. Conrad last night was also named as president of the five-member board.

To help township residents get to (better) know their government leaders, Patch posed five "fun" questions to new commissioners along with Conrad.

Today, Ron Beitler takes our questions.

Q. What's your New Year's resolution?

A. I was never big on resolutions. Making yourself a better person should be a 365 day thing!

Q. What's one of your favorite Lower Macungie restaurants?

A. Tough one. I'd have to say a 3 way tie between Italiano Delite, Buckeye Tavern and Hunan Springs. My fiancée and I tend to gravitate towards locally owned and operated places with character. Italiano Delite represents what a family owned restaurant is all about. On any given night you have 3 generations of family working together. The Buckeye is a wonderful old tavern. I'm also very excited about the owners' new location out in Alburtis. Rehabbing/repurposing existing structures in traditional downtowns vs. greenfield strip mall development IS what smart growth is all about. The Alburtis Tavern represents just that. He really did an amazing job. And finally, Hunan Springs is another unique building with character and the best oriental food around. And of course I can't forget the Willows. It's really become our hometown diner right smack dab in the middle of the township. Friendly people and great food. So I have to actually say a 4 way tie.

Q. What's your favorite spot in the township?

A. My favorite spot in the township is East Texas park. This is my neighborhood park where I grew up. Where I went to the playground program when I was a kid. In fact, I love it so much I'm getting married in the park Gazebo next August.

Q. What was the best holiday gift you received this year?

A. Something I got before the holidays. Sadly, my grandfather passed. My Mammy gave me all my Pappy's old ties. I plan on wearing one when I get sworn in. (He was sworn in Monday night.)

Q. What's one thing that most people don't know about you?

A. I started my business by accident. My friends and I started hosting trivia nights at local pubs just for fun. After that took off we then did a couple small weddings. Then I hooked up with two of my best friends, one who shot photography and another who had film editing experience. All 3 of us had other careers at the time, things we had planned for but before we knew it we had this new business we were running. Fast forward to today and BarNone is our full time job. We've built a great company that we're really proud of
