Borough and Twp. Will Discuss Regional Police Force

Feasibility will be the topic of the informal first meeting.

Macungie Council members will meet with the to discuss the said Borough Manager Chris Boehm at the Aub. 15 council meeting.

Boehm said she received an acceptance letter from the township, and that she recommended the first meeting be informal so both groups can become familiar with what everybody's looking for and to get a grasp on what direction each will take.

“It would basically be a brain-storming session,” Boehm said.

Council Members David Boyko and Guy Ramsey both recommended Police Chief Ed Harry attend the meeting.  “He could answer specific questions that we can’t,” Council President Ramsey said.

Boyko also asked any council members who attend the meeting to keep an open mind in order to provide the best service available for the residents.

Boehm said she will contact the Lower Macungie Commissioners to schedule a meeting.

Ramsey reported that he has “received interest from all municipalities that touch the borough, plus a few others.  [Regionalizing the police force] seems to be something everyone is looking at; especially if there will be a charge for the [Pennsylvania] State Police.”

In other business, Boehm reported a serious concern at 996 Hickory Street, where tree roots have damaged a sidewalk, manhole cover and part of the sewer system.

Discussion ensued as to who is responsible for the repairs.  According to the sidewalk ordinance, the homeowner is liable for all repairs, but Ramsey thinks there are two issues in this circumstance that must be dealt with—one is the tree and the other being the sewer system.  The sewer repairs may be the responsibility of the borough.

Discussion was tabled for the next meeting.  Solicitor Stephanie Kobal will examine the ordinances.

Council's next meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 -- a Tuesday -- due to the Labor Day holiday.
