Come Geocaching for Hidden Treasure

Upper Macungie is sponsoring a free geocaching event today at the township park on Route 100 in Fogelsville.

Geocachers – those high-tech treasure hunters with low standards for what counts as treasure – will be back at it in Upper Macungie on Saturday, June 30.  The public is invited to take part in the free event.

“Cache in the Parks 2012” starts at 10 a.m. at the Hawk Pavilion in Upper Macungie Park, 1625 North Route 100 in Fogelsville. Participants of all ages and abilities can use hand-held GPS units or Smart phones with GPS capabilities to find hidden containers of “treasures.” Usually those treasures are small toys or other trinkets.

Those interested in taking part can bring along a GPS or, if they don’t own one, they can borrow one from event organizers.

The township sponsored event will run rain or shine until 2 p.m.  Last year’s geocaching event attracted participants as young as four years old, according to Upper Macungie Supervisor Kathy Rader.

Township Recreation Board member Chuck Thomas said 60 people took part in last year's event.
