Deadly Intersection Examined in Traffic Study

Lower Mac BOC concerned that the study doesn't pay enough attention to some details.

Officials are aware that the deadly intersection of Route 222 and Mill Creek Road near the Lower/Upper Macungie border is a problem.

A traffic study has recently been completed by the Upper Macungie Planning Commission and the Lower Mac planners and zoners will have the opportunity to study it too, according to Lower Mac Commissioner Doug Brown.

One flaw, however, is that the study does not include "the important intersection at Hamilton Blvd.," Brown said at the BOC's Thursday meeting.

There will be changes made to traffic patterns on the Route 222 bypass in the future, Brown said. He hinted to a change in left turn protocol, but did not elaborate.

The traffic study could be the first step in a possible development, dubbed Liberty at Mill Creek, involving the Air Products campus and its adjacent fields.

Last month, Upper Mac Director of Community Development Ken Molony said the township, its engineers and PennDOT are reviewing improvements to the problem intersection.

"If these improvements are made, they will greatly increase the safety and traffic flow in that area," Molony said at the time.

PennDOT records show 65 accidents with no fatalities occurring at the intersection from January 2007 through January 2011, which is the latest reporting period, according to spokesman Ron Young.
