Jill Biden Lists Ways 'Barack and Joe' Moved Country Forward

The vice president's wife meets with educators and campaigners at the Pennsylvania State Teachers Association in Wescosville on the eve of the Oct. 9 voter registration deadline.

A slightly road-weary Jill Biden addressed fellow educators, former teachers, campaign workers and students assembled by invitation Monday at the offices of the Pennsylvania State Education Association in Wescosville.

Space would only allow for a small group to see Biden, who started her day at Obama headquarters in Harrisburg and then traveled to Scranton and Hazleton before her last stop in Lower Macungie Township.

It was the last stop of an important day – the eve of the final day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

Getting out the vote was the theme sounded by the three enthusiastic Democrats who introduced her: Serena Villalba, a volunteer campaign worker from the West Coast; Easton Mayor Sal Panto, and Joyce Moore of Upper Milford Township, an Obama campaign neighborhood team leader for Emmaus.

Panto challenged each of 100 or so people in the crowd to register just three more voters before the Tuesday, Oct. 9, deadline.

The first words from Biden, who teaches remedial English about 20 minutes from her home at Northern Virginia Community College, were about her students.

“I started my day today writing up my midterm,” she quipped to the knowing groans of the crowd.

But Biden, who grew up in Willow Grove, quickly launched into the points she wanted to make about why President Barack Obama and her husband, Vice President Joe Biden, should be re-elected.

A continued investment in quality education is most important, she said, drawing loud applause from the crowd.

“The current administration has doubled Pell Grant distribution,” Biden said, "and has reformed the way students and parents apply for loans. The community college system, of course, is the cornerstone of higher education."

As a military mom whose son, Beau, served in Iraq with the Delaware Army National Guard, Biden is passionate about promises she said were made – and kept – by the current administration.

“The hope was that Barack would keep his promise to end the war, and he did. Osama bin Laden was brought to justice and now we can end the war in Afghanistan responsibly,” she said.

She also spoke about veterans benefits.

“The president and Joe are moving the country forward by expanding the benefits of the GI Bill, and by extending tax credits to businesses that hire vets,” she said.

“As a woman,” she continued, she is inspired by the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act signed into law by Obama in 2009, and by healthcare reform that prevents insurance companies from charging women more for mammograms and birth control.

Further proof Obama and Biden are moving the country forward, she said:

 * There have now been 31 straight months of job growth, which translates into 5.2 million new jobs.

* The auto industry is back from the verge of bankruptcy.

* “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the policy that required gay and lesbian military service personnel to keep their sexual orientation secret or face discharge, is history.

“It’s a better life today no matter what you look like, or who you love,” she said before making one more plea to her audience to register every voter they can.

“The voter registration deadline is only hours away. Be sure everybody knows they do not need a photo ID to vote,” she said before leaving the podium to shake hands, hug children, collect her daughter, Ashley, who has been accompanying her, and taking her leave.

Jill Biden's visit to the Lehigh Valley comes two months after Michelle Obama campaigned for her husband in Bethlehem. Neither Obama nor Republican Mitt Romney has campaigned in the Lehigh Valley this fall political season.

When looking to the Founding Fathers in support of religion, God, or their followers, you will find yourself disappointed in the result. Thomas Jefferson, one of my favorite Patriots, said
"The Christian god is a three headed monster, cruel, vengeful, and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites."

@Ronald- facts like the earth is flat and was created some 6000 years ago, that blacks were only 3/5 of a person, that women are inferior, that left-handed people are evil...you can see how using the bible to interpret facts has it's limitations. You are free to worship as you choose, but setting a course for this country were others have to worship like you is far from the ideals this country was founded on.

'God' doesn't imply something necessarily Biblical, though - most political philosophy from that era uses God, Nature, Truth, or Creator to say 'inherent' or 'with full cognizance of being.'
Yikes! October 10, 2012 at 06:59 pm
Ronald - you are stating that your beliefs about your version of God are facts. Your belief that nothing happens without ordnance from your God is simply your belief. You may be right and you may be wrong. The Founders were well aware of how dangerous a belief that is, which is perhaps why they placed such importance on freedom of religion for the new world.

What about all the American deaths from the Iraq war that only benefited Haliburton. Gas $$ has to do with low supply of summer time gas. Prices will drop after Oct 15th. Romney says he'll keep all the benefits of obamacare but not pay for it, just like a republican.

Every politician has used the price of gas at the pump to sway the politically uninformed (or, as I guess we call them now, 'swing voters'). It's amazing how many people understand neither inflation nor global commodity pricing.

The idea that every single thing every single person does is being directed through the guiding permission of another being is simply insane. We're doing people a disservice by pretending this is completely normal religious belief and not some persuasion of schizophrenia. It doesn't even make sense on a theological level - if God controls everything, why spell out the Ten Commandments in the first place? Removing agency from humanity is also removing responsibility from humanity - if everything is an omnipotent God's will, then nothing can be changed or improved, and everything we perceive as evil is actually an intentional good that we just can't understand. If God is so unknowable and contradictory, maybe we should all stop pretending that we know specifics about him.

There is a religion for every personality type. Some like to think for themselves and see the inherent beauty in honoring the principle that a higher being could do nothing more loving than granting free will to it's children...that is justice, that is freedom, compassion, the gift of time and endless opportunity...that is the higher standard and the intended promise of America, the New Atlantis that was initiated 300 years ago. My take on it after years of study, anyway.

Please let us focus on the facts: 3 and one half years of record unemployment tempered by an administration that decided they could just stop counting people after a while.
$6,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars in new debt that was supposed to "revive our economy" A foreign policy that has resulted in the Arab world seeing us as a "punk" after bombing embassies and killing Ambassadors with no reply at all. $600 billion dollars given to fake green energy companies who sprang up and magically went out of business. The only common denominator here was the fact the "rich fat cats" of these companies got rich on taxpayer dollars and also happened to be Obama contributors. Increased funding for 3rd world Muslim countries who hate us no matter what along with educational spending cuts here in the U.S. How the teachers, educators, administrators, parents, and taxpayers of our country could possibly think this is good for our children in the public school system is absurd! PLEASE get your information from multiple sources (liberal & conservative) and weigh the facts for yourselves as rational voters! Otherwise, we will continue to be intentionally divided and conquered.
Ken White October 11, 2012 at 03:30 am
Speaking about God and country as some of you are, I think it's quite dumb for presidents to be sworn in with one hand on the Bible or some other religious book. While repeating the oath a president swears to protect what? The Bible? Nope. The Constitution? Yup. Presidents should be sworn in with one hand on the Constitution.

David Curran October 11, 2012 at 03:45 am
Garrett, you strike me as a person that has little regard for history. Why don't you do some research and compare Bush's administration record of terror attacks, unemployment, mismanagement of national disasters and of course the financial markets. I know R's try to disavow his administration ; but that is the one people remember. Add to that some of the Congressional Rs who deny science and are willing to intrude on the rights of women. The R party scares me with some of their ways and beliefs. That my friend is why many moderates could never be in the R Party.
Yikes! October 11, 2012 at 03:46 am
Good point. Does each president choose what book to swear in on? The Constitution instead of the Bible makes more sense to me too.
Charlie D. October 11, 2012 at 12:33 pm
David...Your "history" is conveniently limited to Bush 43. That aside, the only history relevant in this election is that of the current POTUS and his opponent. The facts of the current POTUS record are indisputable (good & bad) as are his proposed changes to our ways of life (taxes, spending, debt, welfare, etc....again, good & bad). It's a decision as to whether each voter prefers to live the next 4 years under the current set of policies and those proposals laid out by the current administration or not. This election has nothing to do with Bush 43....drop it.
Anthony Wayne October 11, 2012 at 01:02 pm
Good idea, however, both expose them as liars. There has not been a president who follows the constitution strictly since before I was born. To make matters worse congress, ordained to keep a check on presidential powers, is silent when faced with illegal exectuive orders and the continued rape of Liberty. The Constitution is the orderly way out of our current situation. But like a fire extinguisher hidden in the cabinet, unable to put out the fire burning around us unless resurected by the voters and those we elect. The republicans had a oppurtunity to choose a conservative, committed to resolve the ominous situation we find ourselves in today, and for a number of reasons his voice was ignored to the detriment of our peaceful and orderly seocity.
Yikes! October 11, 2012 at 01:49 pm
Ron Paul? RP is a Constitutionalist. A threat to the Status Quo. There is something amiss when thousands show up to see a presidential candidate speak in a major cities across the country, yet repeatedly not a single network news team shows up to report on it. This corrupted political system is still fighting to keep the other 2 running candidates out of the debates and even off of the ballots. A sad day for Liberty.
Amend October 11, 2012 at 02:07 pm
Ron Paul made for an interesting candidate, more so than Mitt Romney in my mind. I liked a lot of what ge stood for, but there were parts of his platform I truly supported, but there are others that caused me concern. His laisse faire approach to commerce and the environment, and his somewhat isolationist leanings with foriegn affairs seemed to allow for a vacuum of abuse and corruption. Still, I'd rather have his voice added to the dialogue. Just like Nader, more voices are better than less, and going by the dismal crop of potential candidates that the republican party put forth this election, it couldn't have hurt their party.

Frances please keep in mind that the Clinton era lowered the housing standards and pressured lenders, which ALSO led to our economies demise. Explain right wing war machine with the POTUS not out of Afghanistan yet, in LIBYA, and now in JORDAN at Syrian BORDER?

Sharpie, the safest country in the world is Switzerland. Why? Yes it is true. Every head of household. They've never been invaded and they are tiny, and every dictator in the world keeps their loot there. Sorry but it is true.

Katherine. The world is at our door and while most want a better life, others do not have our best interests at heart. It is hard for gentle people to understand danger. You are in a safe position today here because of many many many men who laid down their lives. The structure they provided us is in jeopardy because we are complacent. It doesn't mean you have to take up arms or anything drastic but get involved in your community, start a pantry, be aware and live in code yellow.

Mr. Campbell and his cast and crew put on a quality , professional production. My children have beenRead More involved in all of the plays since 6th grade, and with this great experience he has given them they will go on to try out for HS productions and in the future college and local productions. Keep up the great work Mr. C and all of the LMMS teachers.

I have timed my visits to Pennsylvania in order to attend some of the productions and they were just great and so well done. My complements to Mr. Campbell and the cast and crew.. Funny how the BOC supporters and Beitler bashers on this comment string do not identify themselves.Read More Who is Adam and Bill and Linda S. ? Why do they not say their last names ? The Beitler/Higgins supporters and BOC critics are not afraid to include their last names so everyone knows who they are. It is cheap and lacking in integrity to attack anonymously. And Mr. Eichenberg need to decide whether he wants to sell commercial real estate in Lower Macungie or be a commissioner. He can't serve his community in an unbiased fashion while at the same time making profit on real estate transactions. abstain fromvoting

Hey, Noah. You seem to have a lot of anger. Ever heard of The Butterfly Garden? It's a projectRead More being developed by the Lower Macungie Garden Club, on the Community Center Campus--yes, the same place you walk to for meetings-- to provide a place for reflection, education, and peace. The ground has already been dug; it can be seen from the Library, where children can learn about butterflies and all of us can have a resting experience. Why don't you contact me and help us?
Noah Bodie May 25, 2013 at 12:32 am
Hi Janet, Thanks for the tip on the garden, I'll be sure to take my 5 and 3 year old nephews onceRead More it's built. I'm not an angry individual, on the contrary I'm a fun loving individual. I just believe in old fashion values and calling a spade a spade good, bad or ugly. Unfortunately are too afraid to hear the truth and hear things how they really are and would rather live in a fantasy world bubble instead of reality. In addition I have a very low tolerance for other people's BS, Disrespect, and ignorance. There is a saying from the old country to be stupid is one thing, but to be down right ignorant is unacceptable.
Ron Beitler May 15, 2013 at 03:44 pm
Hi Frank, I have no problem with Realtors or the profession, some of my best friends are realtorsRead More (and many agree with me that realtors shouldnt be making development decisions) It's is a fact the "fake newsletter" being distributed by incumbents is being paid for by the realtor association. Look at the "paid for" label. Let me ask you this, do think outside special interests should be putting money into local races? I'm guessing over 15,000 dollars at least so far has come from a PAC in Lomoyne, PA funding the incumbents. The realtor association IS against traffic and other important impact fees. Are you against these fees? If so why? I think these protections are important for our community. I'm not against realtors, just against the realtor special interest lobby trying to buy elections and realtors who are also commissioners profiting off changing rules. Realtors shouldnt be voting on development decisions. Take Wes Barrett councilman in Emmaus. He isnt even the rep on the land in question but he recently abstained from the Indian Creek subdivision just because he owns a realtor business. Thats how you avoid conflicts of interest. Conrad, Reis and Eichenberg shouldnt be voting on ANY development decisions. Looking forward to your response and hope that clears up my position. Ron Beitler www.ronbeitler.com
Michael D Siegel May 15, 2013 at 04:37 pm
I agree Ron. Realtors should be on a planning commission- where their experience is appreciated forRead More land developments and any vote is non-partisan. Having three real estate agents as commissioners appears to favor all land developments because of their power to make decisions. Having an outside agency support a local political race is unheard of and indicates the seriousness of the power of real estate agents have in swaying voters minds. Voters need to make up their own mind and not some outside power group. I do not want some outside group deciding how our community is ran- this is just plain wrong
Alburtis Parent May 15, 2013 at 07:04 pm
So..........if Ron Eichenberg, Roger Reis, and Ryan Conrad have spend approximately $15,000 on aRead More pretend newsletter, 2 robo calls and a television ad.......imagine how much MONEY THEY STAND TO MAKE on the SWEETHEART DEALS THEY HAVE SET UP FOR THEMSELVES. That....right there....should be proof enough for the residents of Lower Macungie that these elected officials are corrupt beyond measure, and NEED TO BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE!
