Lower Macungie Begins Camp Olympic Improvements

By mid-November its transformation into a recreational and educational park should be complete.

Lower Macungie Township Manager Bruce Fosselman announced at the Oct. 6 Board of Commissioners meeting that everything is going as planned with the start of improvements on the Camp Olympic property.

The township has begun the renovations that, at the end, will be Camp Olympic Park as outlined in the 2011 Master Site Plan.

The swimming pool has been removed and paved for a new parking lot and restroom area.

A new entry has also been created along Cedar Crest Boulevard.

The two current entrances on Cedar Crest Boulevard — the main driveway near what was the pool and one at the barn — still exist.  The barn entrance will be used as an access to the new parking area near the barn, and the main entrance near the old pool will be closed off.

The master plan indicates the main driveway has, “Limited sight lines and heavy traffic” and the drive at the barn, “Does not provide a suitable main entrance for vehicular traffic.”

The new entry, located at the highpoint between the two existing entrances, will provide a safer access to the park, and will also make use of a portion of the Old Cedar Crest Boulevard.

The demolition of the pool complex and old driveways, creation of a new entrance, new restrooms, parking lot additions and improvements are estimated to cost approximately $340,000.

Improvements are expected to be completed by mid-November.
