Macungie Flower Park May Grow Live on Webcam

Macungie's Town Beautification Committee asks Council to put a web cam in the Flower Park.

The question "How does your garden grow?" may be easily answered soon with a click on the Borough of Macungie website.

The Town Beautification Committee's request to install a webcam in the Macungie Flower Park so residents -- or anybody -- can check in on the beautiful blooms.

Borough Manager Chris Boehm told council members at Tuesday's meeting that RCN, the borough's internet provider, has offered to install the services the borough gets for free in 10 places.

But even a seemingly innocent and, really, joyful, addition brings serious questions.

"Why a webcam?" Council Member Debra Cope asked. "Just to watch the flower grow?"

Indeed, that is the purpose, Boehm said, and because it's just a beautiful park. It will not be used for any kind of security purposes.

It would be "just for nice," as the saying goes.

Boehm referenced the webcam Emmaus broadcasts of its Triangle.

Councilman Joseph Sikorski asked how the webcam would be protected and if the borough would be liable for any damage.

Mayoral candidate Gary Cordner suggested that neighbors of the Flower Park be informed if and when the webcam is installed so they don't think their privacy is being invaded.

The details are still being worked out among RCN, the borough and Town Beautification, Boehm said.
