Macungie Police Chief Ed Harry eased residents’ concerns about the new foot patrol policy recently instituted within the borough.
“There are no problems,” he said at the Oct. 17 council meeting. “It’s just something we will now be doing on all three shifts when we have two officers on duty.”
According to Harry, officers will get out of the patrol car at various times throughout their shift in different parts of the borough and walk around the vicinity for about 15-20 minutes, possibly as much as a half hour. They will check to be sure everything is okay, as well as meet people in the neighborhoods.
Harry said people have been stopping their cars and coming out of their homes to ask the officers walking around the area if there are any problems in the neighborhood they should be aware of. Some residents have called the police department wondering what is going on, he added.
“I don’t want anybody to be concerned. There isn’t anything going on in your neighborhoods,” he said. “We’re trying to be more visible in the neighborhoods and to be more pro-active.”
