Rick Hoffman Still Wants Macungie to Pay His Legal Bills

Former Macungie Mayor Rick Hoffman still owes more than $100,000 in legal fees from his battle over access to the Macungie police department and he's asking the courts to make the borough pay his bill.

Rick Hoffman hasn't been Macungie mayor since June, and in fact now lives in Virginia, but he's still trying to get the borough to pay his legal bills in his long fight over access to the police department.

His attorney told a Lehigh County judge Thursday that Hoffman still owes his firm about $111,000, according to a Morning Call story, which noted the case also cost the borough more than $100,000.

The judge did not rule on the legal fees issue, which the state Supreme Court sent back to county court when it declined in July to hear appeals from Hoffman and Lehigh County, The Call story said.

A Jan. 3 Patch story reported that Hoffman emerged victorious when state Commonwealth Court ruled in his favor. The court upheld county Judge Michele Varricchio's September 2011 decision that Hoffman is the borough's chief law enforcement officer, as well as other points of the case.

Hoffman resigned his post as Macungie mayor in June to retire in the hills of Virginia, but he told Patch at that time that he'd immediately head back to Pennsylvania in support of his ongoing litigation against the borough and its police department, should it become necessary.

Borough Council replaced Hoffman following with Gary Cordner as interim mayor, and Cordner won a full four-year term in the Nov. 5 election.
