Bad Weather Forces Some Closings, Schedule Changes

Slippery conditions play havoc with school and work schedules to extend long holiday weekend for some.

The mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain continues to delay and postpone events in the Macungie and Lower Macungie Township area.

* In addition to the cancellation of East Penn schools classes on Tuesday, all school sports listed on the district's Web site have been postponed. The Lower Macungie Library also has closed for Tuesday.

* The roundtable forum between East Penn Invested Citizens and school district officials to discuss "budget challenges" and the future of education has been postponed. The session has been rescheduled for 7-8:30 Jan. 25 in the Emmaus Public Library.

* As for the sports make-up dates, rifle will compete at Southern Lehigh in Center Valley on Wednesday at 4 p.m . And, basketball games with Parkland have been  moved to Monday. The boys will be at home with the junior varsity starting at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7. The girls will be on the road to play Parkland in South Whitehall Township at the same times.

Snow lightly began falling in the Macungie and Lower Macungie Township area about 10 p.m. Monday. Roads covered quickly and the storm intensified by midnight, falling steadily. Precipitation had changed to sleet by 2 a.m. and to freezing rain by morning, coating surfaces with ice.

Precipitation is expected to change to all rain until about 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Freezing rain is likely to make a return until about 10 p.m., then turn to rain as temperatures rise slightly. The NWS calls for a chance of showers Wednesday with a high of 38 degrees.
